When God Becomes Real

Panic snuck up on Brian Johnson while he was out with his son, and it clung to him on his desperate drive home. Feeling almost outside of himself, his family called 911. He was spiraling into darkness. Waiting for the ambulance to arrive, unsure of what was happening, he gathered his family around him and asked them to pray for him. Then he said these pivotal words, "This is when God becomes real." In his first book, Brian shares how the panic and anxiety of his early life - panic he'd thought he'd beaten - came back to haunt him. After experiencing debilitating anxiety attacks from the age of seven into his early adult years, Brian learned how worship ushered in the presence of God and pushed the panic away.Â

Now in his mid-30s and believing himself free, Brian had a vision for worship in the church, built a successful music label with his wife, and wrote award-winning songs and albums. He was at the height of his success, and from all appearances, things were better than ever. But in the midst of that success, the ghost of his childhood anxiety returned, stronger than ever, and it pulled Brian into a downward spiral of chaos and darkness.

In the year that would follow, Brian came to experience the ultimate power of surrendering the panic and chaos to God. Whether or not you've struggled with panic and anxiety, you've found yourself in pain, asking God for relief. In When God Becomes Real, Brian shares his vulnerable story of overcoming panic and anxiety. Discover how you might find God, even in your darkest hour.

Love the story and his vulnerability to share such a personal experience! The Christian community most certainly needs to hear this. On the other hand, I’m not a huge fan of the charismatic aspects of Bethel, something that flows into this book. He explains stories of him talking in tongues at an early age, being influenced by demonic presences, and seeing demon-possessed people in the church. Lines such as, “a woman screamed,” and “arms shook” describing demon possession taking place is ... eh. I believe in Jesus but the whole Charismatic Movement is not my faith. It’s hard to get passed it if you’re in my same boat. Just research Bethel Redding before getting this book. Know the belief systems of Bethel and understand it flows into this book. I clench at some of the words ... but the story itself is important and timely. I flip flop in this review - just because I love the message of the book but simply can’t get behind the overall belief system of Bethel.

I appreciate the vulnerability with which Brian shared his story. I wanted to read this book to gain tools to help me overcome some challenges I’ve been facing. I feel like I got what I came for, as well as tools to help my son when he comes to me at night in fear. I enjoyed learning about the beginnings of Bethel Music as their worship has had a huge impact on me. I realize the price that has been paid for so many of us to be blessed through their worship. I would recommend this book for anyone in a difficult season who finds help in hearing how others have overcome.I will say that I wish the editing was better. There were several typos, which I only mention since this is the first Bethel publication and something that could be improved upon for future publications.

As someone who has recently (and surprisingly) found himself in a season of experiencing anxiety and depression, the timing of Brian Johnson's book could not have been better. Like Brian, I experienced anxiety as a child (though to a lesser degree) and now find myself as an adult battling a somewhat new but strangely familiar demon. What I liked about Brian's story is the distinction he draws from his earlier and later experience, describing the the former as more spiritual and the latter, for lack of better words, "physical." If you are a Christian believer especially in the revival culture, you --- like Brian --- know there is really no hard and fast distinction, since the world we inhabit is inescapably a spiritual one, and even our physical realities have spiritual dimensions. Bethel Church culture knows this better than anyone, of course, since they regularly witness physical healing through spiritual means. But the distinction is important in that Brian recognizes the cause of his present season is simply different than what he experienced while younger, and this sets the stage for him to explore spiritual realities of, and spiritual strategies to combat, each.I do not wish to give away too much, but Brian's season of anxiety is finally remedied by what I would call relational and emotional aspects of the Kingdom. In other words, Brian discovers his key to breakthrough is to acknowledge and process emotions related to relationships and past events that he had been "stuffing", and to go through the process of reconciliation and re-alignment with how he works through his own emotions and with others. There is also that key element of making it a priority of simply slowing down and spending time with the Father. All of this provides not only a tremendous amount of hope to the person suffering from anxiety but also a beautiful compliment to the other spiritual strategies and disciplines that Brian describes throughout the book. In short, my takeaway was that the Kingdom, though about light and darkness, is also fundamentally relational, and that God really, really cares about the relationships we have --- with ourselves, with others, and with Him --- and that sometimes the most powerful spiritual weapon we have in our arsenal is to allow ourselves to feel and to nurture the relationships we have with God and those closest to us.In closing, I also love what Brian said in the final pages of his book: "I would not trade (my season) for the world." Painful, yes. But worth the transformation? Absolutely. God is able to heal all forms of sickness including anxiety and depression, and we can trust him in our season to get us to the other side and get to the root of what is driving us, so that we too will be able to say, "It was worth it all."

This book did not disappoint. Brian’s vulnerability in sharing his testimony is much appreciated, and I know it’s going to touch many lives! There were so many great insights and moving moments from Brian’s story.I was inspired by Bill & Beni’s parenting style.I was thrilled to find how vital worship was in his healing process and how from an early age it shaped him to be the worship leader he is today.I was floored by his observation that, “When someone is healed instantly, it often speaks of their identity as a son or daughter of God. But when healing or freedom is progressive and takes place over time it’s often because a person is being trained for war, and when you’re trained for war, you gain authority and power in that area.”And I was completely moved by Brian’s story of overcoming panic/anxiety, and truly felt like someone can relate with me when I say that sometimes it just happens irrationally.I also really enjoyed getting to learn more about Brian and Jenn’s relationship, how he stepped into his calling as a worship pastor, and how Bethel Music formed and progressed to what it is today.I highly encourage everyone to read this book, but ESPECIALLY those of you that struggle with anxiety/panic attacks. You are not alone. Even the people you look up to struggle, but there is victory in Jesus. 💛

I am only 1/2 through but there is nothing like a testimony that speaks truth and vulnerability. I love your dad and his books immensely but this book will touch so many lives who desperately need hope. I am going to buy several to give to folks struggling with these issues! Thanks for being obedient and writing this book!
