This is a library book that one of the Hat Huggers members was just returning when I was at the library. It looked like a lot of fun. I didn't read every page because, well, it's patterns. But I copied the pages that I wanted to try for later and I'm returning it back to the library. What I liked about the book was there was a lot of pictures with a lot of colors which was helpful to my eyes. Each row of a pattern had enough space in between that I knew my eyes wouldn't get lost in the process. And there are some really cute things in this book that I can't wait to try.I've looked at other reviews and many people find that the patterns didn't work for them for some reason. I'll let you know later if that's the case here when I try a few of these. The hat featured on the front of the book look like a lot of fun, a kind of lacy cowboy hat which would be perfect out here I have to make some for the Hat Huggers and then one for me, with my own yarn, of course! ;-)
I purchased this as a gift for my sister-in-law who is just learning to crochet. She was looking for a book that would be good for more visual learners like herself as well as something that would work for her daughter who does better with written instructions. I already own this book even though I'm more of a knitting gal but sometimes I will try and bust out a large granny square baby blanket for friends and it has always been a great reference book for me. I can quickly flip to the right page and just review the illustrated instructions for the stitch that I can't quite remember how to do.As well as being my favorite learn to crochet resource his book was also the number one learn to crochet (for adults) book that I recommended when I worked at a yarn store. Many adults and teens got a kick out of the title and the writing style is really entertaining. It has many different patterns not only patterns for scarfs and other rectangular items and it has very clear instructions in both a written and illustrated format as well as some nice history and general information on yarn types and different hook types.
I've been knitting for more than 50 years and about two years ago I decided I needed to learn to crochet. I got several "how to crochet" books and started on my merry way. However, as I moved on from potholders, towels, etc, I found instructions in patterns that I didn't know how to do and that none of my books explained. I had to set aside projects when I got stuck.I resisted this book mainly because of the title. I thought it would be frivolous and not much help to a beginner. I'm happy to report that it is not and now wish I had gotten it in the first place and saved money spent on all those other books. The first part of the book has instructions on how to crochet with VERY CLEAR illustrations and text that explains just how and where to insert a hook for whatever you need to do. The language is very easy to understand but the illustrations are the icing on the cake. For instance, when the pattern calls for placing a stitch in the top of the beginning chain of the last row which one is it? This book not only tells you how but shows you exactly where. Many, many years ago Coats & Clark published a little booklet on learning to knit with very easy to see illustrations. I've been looking for something similar for crocheting and now I've found it in 'The Happy Hooker.' I love this book and haven't even started on the patterns, some of which I am looking forward to making. I highly recommend it to all who want to learn crocheting or need to improve their technique.
I have had the first knitting book in this series for a couple of years, and then I learned how to crochet. While searching for books of patterns for items that I would actually use and finding this one, I knew it was perfect. There are many wonderful patterns for clothing, accessories, and gifts, and the style of the book is written for people who want to go beyond scarves and dish cloths, and there are some fabulous variations on scarves as well.
I love this book! I have made several patterns out of it and they are all well written and fairly quick projects. It is kind of a go-to book when you want to make a hat, scarf or purse for someone as a gift. Although I already know how to crochet, this book includes a lot of "learn to crochet" photos and instructions so it is great for beginners, but novices will appreciate the great selection of patterns.
I have the paperback version of this book which I passed down to my daughter when she decided to learn crocheting. After years of my use and now the not-so-gentle use from our pre-teen, my paperback is slowly falling apart. Because it's such a great crochet book, I decided to buy the digital version so I can have a backup copy. If you're into crochet or knitting, ALL of Debbie Stoller's books are fabulous. Highly recommend!! PS - the author also has SnB errata info online for any pattern corrections or clarifications :)
I am a knitter that has struggled to learn crochet. This book covers the small details that have hung me up in the past, such as where EXACTLY do you insert the crochet hook in different situations? Stoller explains clearly and precisely all of the little details that a new crocheter needs to know. It is as if she got into my head and answered all the questions and addressed all the issues that I have had while learning how to do crochet. While this book covers very well the first steps involved in the learning process, it also covers more complex stitches, construction of garments and following patterns. I am finally on my way to reading crochet patterns and producing worthwhile items! Highly recommended reading for the novice and more advanced fiber artist.
I thought this would just be a cute coffee table book to start conversations; but this is an excellent book to learn from. I love how all options, as well as pros and cons, are presented for different techniques. Other books/tutorials seem to present one option that the writer believes is best without giving options. As we all know, not all methods work for all people in all situations! This book also had well written instructions for the patterns; I just wish I had more time to make more items from it!
