The desire to kill is becoming contagious in this riveting novel of conceivable mad science by The Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Naturalist.

It happened at the excavation site where a murderer had buried his victims' remains. In custody is a forensic technician in shock, with no history of aggression. He doesn't remember a thing. His colleagues don't even recognize the man they thought they knew. But an MRI reveals something peculiar. And abnormal.

What on earth made him commit murder?

I was prepared to give this book an easy 5 star review. The first book of the series was awesome, it checked all the boxes for me. Science, crime drama, nature, and more. Then the second book: it was ok but really lost me in the political drama. This third book was highly anticipated for me and was a huge return to the roots of the first. I read it in less than 24 hours. Interesting bad guy. Twists and turns. Math. Science. Interesting sidekicks. I was completely hooked. However, I cannot support the use of a cliffhanger in literary work. Sorry. It’s a cheap way out and robs your readers of the satisfaction of reading a book that you only release once a year. Did you think your abilities in writing were so poor I wouldn’t read the next one without some cheap ending? Well. I was gonna read the next one either way. But I’m definitely not looking forward to it as much as I don’t trust you as an author. Consider maybe being more consistent next time and not pissing your readers off right at the end so that they write their reviews of your book freshly scorned ;).

The crime mystery and thriller genres are full of protagonists who claim they will go to any lengths to stop a killer, but computation biologist Dr. Theo Cray will give them all a run for their money in this totally insane and off-the-wall third volume of Andrew Mayne’s exciting Naturalist series.Once more our hero is on the trail of a serial killer, but this time, he may have met his match. You might even say that Theo is hunting for a dark version of himself, a difficult quandary that forces him to confront some uncomfortable truths about his own psyche. Our protagonist has always been a driven man, motivated by problems to solve because they allow him to design models and exercise his intelligence, not to mention his work also saves lives and puts murderers out of commission. This time though, his ego is also a major driving force, and while he may be cognizant of the fact, his competitive streak stills gets him into all kinds of trouble. Of course, Theo being Theo, he’s no stranger to trouble, and half the fun of these books is watching him try to mentally MacGyver himself out of some super tight spots.Things do take a slightly dark turn though, as Theo is pushed to the limits. Our boy takes vigilantism to a whole other level in this one, and if you thought his law-flouting and risk-taking was extreme in the previous books, just wait ‘til you see what he does here. There’s a lot I love about this series, including the thrilling action and fascinating science, but a big part of the enjoyment is also in watching the main character grow over time. By the end of Murder Theory, we may be witnessing another change in Theo as he realizes he may have taken things a little too far and that his by-any-means-necessary attitude might be swiftly leading him down a dangerous path.I continue to be impressed by the scientific aspects, as well as Theo’s knack for spotting patterns in the data. Mayne’s storytelling is also once again on full throttle in this fast-paced no-stops thrill ride boosted with plenty of humor and straight up crazy twists. That said, Murder Theory didn’t make me laugh nearly as much as the previous books did, but I’m just going to chalk it up to the darker, more macabre direction of the story. And though technically this isn’t a real criticism, I found the book way too short! Talk about leaving me wanting more; this was a book hangover that hit me even before I could finish! It's no exaggeration when I say I would have happily gone for another hundred pages or two following Theo on his pursuit of the killer, and I was practically distraught when the book ended, because damn, that last line! What more can I say, but I just loved this. I love this series. I love Theo Cray. Yes, things can get a little bonkers sometimes, but that’s what makes these books so amazing. Every time I pick up something with Andrew Mayne’s name on the cover, I know I’ll be in for a hell of a good time, and he hasn’t let me down yet. Can’t wait for the next one.

One of the things I enjoy about the Naturalist series is the use of science to catch the bad guy as Dr. Theo Cray has done in the two previous books. Of course, he's at it again and this time, he's up against someone doing the same thing he does - using science - but instead of using it to catch killers, the killer is using it to be a more stealthy and deadly killer than any Cray's encountered before. As usual, Cray stumbles onto a serial killer and as usual, he makes it so much worse on himself in order to get law enforcement to listen. Although, I have to ask, at this point, why exactly are law enforcement in general so deaf to his theories? Really, he's shown them the errors of their ways a couple of times already. He does, like in previous books, gain a few believers who help him as he rushes to find and capture the killer. This book, due to the way the killer kills, necessitated long passages where there were several page of exposition in order to set up an understanding for the reader. I did feel it got a bit too much in these sections and felt more like a lecture than a story. Although, to be fair, I'm not sure how the author could have avoided it given the complex nature of the killer's MO. Either way, it felt a bit clunky at times. There were a couple of complete over the top issues with this book and I was glad the girlfriend was able to voice the same thing I thought - Cray gets into these cases/hunts not because he stumbled upon them but actually searches for them. His troubles are almost 100% self-induced all in the name of catching the killer. He could utilize less dramatic methods but then, that would make a boring book, yes?All in all, not a bad book but I don't think it was quite as good as the previous two stories. There was, perhaps, a bit of a setup for the next book right at the end. Should prove interesting. Four stars.

If you know of this author than you already know what I mean. He not only writes excellent stories but is in fact a serial killer. In this third installment of the series, he proves without a doubt that he knows more about how be a serial killer than anyone in history. Even the idea of making a continuing serial of the story lays clear the man's' motives. He's trying to cover for his own series of clever yet gruesome murders.Oh sure he might seem nice. He eats at Arby's, he likes ladies with big large gene pools in the backyard, he might even say hello to strangers in a crowded mall but don't be deceived. This is a dangerous man. Buy the book to find out for yourself why Andrew is the most likely literary figure to never get caught for all his dastardly deeds of dismemberment and desanguination. Don't get defenestrated! Get the book now! Protect yourself, no one else will.
